The History of a Lie

Bernstein, Herman. The History of a Lie. Delhi Open Books, 1921.

Bernstein's book was one of the very first refutations of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion to be widely read. He traced the origins of the Protocols to a French political pamphlet published in 1864. He also showed that the Protocols were plagiarized from other fictional sources, and that they contained many factual errors. Around the same time, Bernstein instituted a libel suit (which he won) against Henry Ford and the Dearborn Independent for publishing the scurrilous antisemitic forgery, Protocols of the Elders of Zion.  Bernstein (1876-1935) was an author, translator, journalist, communal activist, and diplomat, who among many important positions, served as correspondent for the New York Herald in Russia in 1917-1920 and at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. In the 1920s, he also served as secretary of the American Jewish Committee.
